LINDSBORG — The Karpov Chess School in Lindsborg has kicked off its annual fund-raising campaign with a campaign goal to raise $6,000.

President Marck Cobb noted that last year’s fund-raising efforts resulted in a number of donors from Lindsborg, McPherson, Galva, Canton and Hillsboro who, each, contributed $500 to sponsor a student to attend the Karpov Chess Camp. Nine students received scholarships and studied under Grandmaster Yury Shulman and FIDE Master Tom Brownscombe.

“Donors who contribute at least $50 will have their name or their business name placed on a square on our giant Community Chess Board,” said Brownscombe.

The giant Community Chessboard is made of alternating colors of four-inch tiles. When the tiles are sold, the chessboards will be placed on display in the window of the Karpov Chess School. Last year’s chessboard is currently on display in the window.

Businesses or organizations who contribute $100 will be recognized with a display ad of their business or logo placed on the chess school’s web site, along with a Web link. All donations are tax deductible.

Donors who donate $50 will receive the 2-DVD set Clash of the Titans that features scenes of Lindsborg and interviews with World Chess Champions Anatoly Karpov and Susan Polgar. The DVD set, shot in Lindsborg, features the chess parade and interviews with other Grandmasters.

The Karpov Chess School, which stresses the link between chess and improved reading and math scores, has trained over 150 students in 2007.

Players are invited to come to the Social Chess nights at 7 p.m. each first and third Thursday of the month. The Karpov Chess School is located at 106 S. Main, Lindsborg.

Other upcoming events can be viewed on the school’s web site: http://www.anatolykarpovchessschool.org/.
