Qd1! much better than Ng6+
No matter how many times I see this position. It still feels the same.
KILLER MOVE!!
1. Qd1 🙂
Simple and oh so elegant 🙂
1Exausted all the attacking moves.
Defensive move is the answer.
White has an extra piece but black threatens … Qxc1+ followed by …Rf1#.White’s best seems to be
1Qd1
Black’s threats are addressed and he has no adequate move.
Qd1 amazing… its happen in the game???
Qd1
1.Qg8+ RxQg8 2.Sf7+ QxSf7 3.QxQf7 +-

1.Qg8+ RxQg8 2.Sf7+ QxSf7 3.QxQf7 +-
Nice but easy.
repost. But still amazing brilliancy.
I like player as Alekhine and i know for settle this solution:
1.Qd1 Bxd1
2.Rxc7
– Black resigned 1-0
#From: PaulMorphy2011 (Malaysian)
This looks familiar.
Black has multiple threats: Qxc1 followed by Rf1# and Qxd6.
I can’t see any way for White to attack his way out of this. Nf7, Ng6 and Qg8 don’t seem to work.
White loses the Knight and Bishop (or Knight & Rook for Bishop) after R6d1.
That leaves only Qd1 as a possible defense. After Bxd1 Rxc7, White seems to have a much stronger position.
Using the chess engine Houdini 2.0b and Deep Fritz 12, here is what I got (that I could not have found by myself):

Like Haridaran, an amazing position, and one Susan posted here not that long ago. I am fortunate I just happen to remember the solution, otherwise I might well have spent many minutes running through all the other 10 more obvious moves once again since the solution is quite subtle.

An anonymous commenter asked if Alekhine played this. The answer is yes:

I’d like to second the other comments that this one is actually pretty good. I had it open and every once in a while I tried to look at it to find the solution but it was very tough.
I gave up and checked the comments. Lo and behold, I wasn’t close to solving this one. At some point I thought I needed to defend, but never put the Queen on d1.
