LOCAL chess player and former NSW Lightning champion John Curtis has showed he can still mix it with the best.

At the weekend Curtis held current Australian Lightning champion Jesse Sales to a draw in the Mingara Recreation Club’s Saturday Rapid tournament.

Four players shared second place behind the winner, Sydney chess player Jason Hu.

Curtis is a former 10-times NSW Lightning champion but eight of those titles came in the period from 1977 to 1988.

The event, hosted by Mingara Chess Club, attracted 46 players.

Mingara’s first junior chess championship attracted 16 players, with Toowoon Bay’s Timothy Guo the overall winner.

Winner of the second age division competition was Toukley’s Tom Williams.

Organiser Shirley Winsor said the championship would become an annual event and hopefully encourage more girls and boys to take up chess.
