Checkmate! Foothills Library starting chess club
June 22, 2009 – 7:38 PM

Chess enthusiasts looking for a place to test their skills against human opponents will be able to say checkmate Thursday.

The Foothills library, 13228 E. South Frontage Road, will hold the inaugural meeting of its Chess Club at 3 p.m.

The event is free, and all ages and skill levels are welcome.

Event organizers said they have a few chess boards but recommend that attendees bring their own if possible.

“This is geared to all ages and all degrees of proficiency from beginner to advanced,” said Jeffrey Bowman, Foothills Library manager.

“Even if you have never played before, there will be people to teach newcomers how to play. There will also be some competition for experienced players.

“Chess in person is much better than playing a computer. Human emotions can be an interesting factor in any sort of game, and a computer cannot give you an emotional response.”

Chess is a board game of strategic skill for two players, played on a checkered board. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces that are moved and used to capture opposing pieces according to precise rules. The object is to put the opponent’s king under a direct attack from which escape is impossible.

“Chess involves a lot of strategy and planning ahead,” said Bowman. “It is a good way to exercise the brain.”

Bowman added that chess can be enjoyed by anyone.

“I think this is a community activity, and anything that helps community across the spectrum of socio-economic factors is a good thing, and the library is a great place to do that. It is a safe environment and people can feel secure in coming here. They will have a great experience.”
