Rxe6!
Yes Rxe6+!
That is NO SOLUTION.
that is only the first easy move of the solution. it gets hard after that.
1 Rxe6+ Qxe6
2 Qxe6+ Kf8
3 Bh6+ Kg8
4 Qg6+ Kh8
5 Qxf7 any move
6 Qg7#
I bet a million dollars and I guarantee you did not see all of that.
1 Rxe6+ Kf8
2 Bh6+ Rg7
3 Qe8# or
3 Qxg7#
and
1 Rxe6+ dxe6
2 Rd8#
now for completeness we add
1 Rxe6+ Qxe6
2 Qxe6+ dxe6
3 Rd8#
and
1 Rxe6+ Qxe6
2 Qxe6+ Re7
3 Qxe7#
Now I think I have covered everything. I submit the above as a solution to the problem.
No offense Mr anonymous but after Rxe6 its really not half as hard as you make it sound. Im sure the two people the posted solutions saw the whole thing.
Happy New Year Susan 🙂
Here is something else, also very nice:
1. Rxe6+ Qxe6 (if pawn takes, then Rd8#. If the king moves, then the Q is lost for a rook and a pawn)
2. Qf8+ Re8 (the only move).
3. Qxe6 dxe6
4. Rd8#
Yevlev, you mean
Rd8+ Kf7 not Rd8# 😉

this gives me a chuckle. Anonymous is talking to anonymous and correcting anonymous. kind of funny.
I would like to say that it does not really matter if they saw the entire thing. the object of this blog is to give a solution so dummies like me can read the entire answer. ( I only get maybe 1 in 10 of these puzzles. and I need all the help I can get. )
When I was in high school I had this math teacher. and believe me if I put down the answer without showing how I arrived at the answer then I would get a big fat ZERO on that problem.
years ago I bought a big book of chess puzzles and I enjoyed working them out. and I want to say that on at least 80% of those that I got wrong. almost all the wrong ones. I always had the first move correct but did not know how to follow it up. I found the follow up to be very difficult.
So I can see where anonymous is coming from. the book I had worked out the solutions completely. the book did not give ONLY the first move.

Well that is good. Seeing as they see all the moves correctly right up to checkmate. with the best possible defense. then it is super easy for them to mark the moves down. after all they see all the moves. so dont keep it a secret. let everyone know what the moves are.
I think it is Qg8#
