SCHOOL teacher Manoj Kumar scooped top honours in yesterday’s Christmas Open blitz championship at the FASANOC House.

National rep and pre-competition favourite Kumar totaled 14.5 points from 16 games.

He won 14 games in the five-minute shortened version of the game, drew one and in the upset result of the day was beaten by Fiji Chess Federation secretary and arbiter Dr Jashint Maharaj.

Candidate Master Calvin Prasad finished second with 13 points while Dr Maharaj was third with 12 points.

Young Wayne Areki with four points from as many wins was the best junior player of the championship.

Dr Maharaj said top finishers received cash prizes.

He said nine players competed in the championship played on double round robin format.

“We had a good day of competition.”

“With the Christmas break here, it was good to see the national reps coming out in force.

“This is the last event of 2008 and the championship basically caps off a good year for FCF. “

“We are eagerly looking forward to 2009 for bigger and brighter things as it will be the 30th year for FCF,” he said.
