FIDE sues chess ex-champion Anatoli Karpov for libel

President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) Kirsan Ilyumzhinov sued former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov for libel, Moscow’s Gazeta daily reported on Thursday.
“This is the first time during my 20-year career when I reported to a court. Now I applied to FIDE ethical commission in Italy and filed a claim to a (Moscow’s district) court,” Ilyumzhinov, who is also president of Kalmykia republic in southern Russia, said.
Anatoly Karpov earlier accused FIDE of corruption.
Karpov, the twelfth world champion, was nominated for the post of FIDE president to be elected this fall. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was another nominee for the chair.
Ilyumzhinov stressed that he fell no personal offense for Karpov.
Current election campaign in FIDE has been marred by the scandals from the start. In May, a group of supporters of Anatoly Karpov and another ex-champion Garry Kasparov broke into the Chess House in downtown Moscow and seized the property.
“Karpov and Kasparov exhausted themselves as the chess players, that is why they try to draw public attention with the inadequate behavior,” Ilyumzhinov said.
If re-elected, FIDE head, whose hobbies include, besides chess, boxing, promised to lobby the chess to become a mandatory subject in the schools in Russia and other countries.
FIDE comprises of over 170 national chess federations.

Karpov needs to drop out for the sake of chess. He’s over his head.
I think its rather sad. This Fide president….who says he’s been abducted by Aliens..the cheap RCF politics….its really rather childish…..They’re all acting like kids. Karpov would probably make a better president in this case…is been there..done that…he’s a billionaire…and he probably would bring some fresh ideas to the system. Fide ..like many Chess Federations is run by petty political agendas.. Like they say in Academics….”The reason they fight so hard…is because..there is so little in their world to fight about” I really hope they grow up

Karpov is the one who surrounds himself with corrupt people. If he wants to change FIDE then he first needs to dump many people on his team.
They are all corrupt.
Lets drop chess and play tiddlywinks instead.
what is libel?
The funny thing here is that Chess is actually referred to as the game for gentlemen and wise people. And then, look at the candidates we have to run our organization. Is this is chess…no wonder the rest of the world can’t get its political systems straight.

Karpov says, “FIDE is corrupt!” Ilyumzhinov sues him for libel. By that standard, where would USCF critics be?
This reminds me of you guys against the USCF. These organizations are run by people who play by a different set of rules than the rest of the world. If you go into their world, you must play by their rules. I think Karpov would be a great FIDE President but it is not worth his time. Probably Kasparov has a better chance of becoming the Russian president here.
the beaurocracy keeps on rolling along. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m tired of the “he said she said” stuff. I can’t recall a time in chess history when a person who actually wanted what was best for chess actually held any power in chess politics … I guess they were all actually busy playing the game.
The lawsuit is a tactic for the election. There is no way a libel suit will be completed before the voting is completed.
BUT, the fact that the lawsuit has been filed is intended to make possible voters doubt Karpov by thinking, “Irsan must have some certainty, otherwise why would he file suit?”
Filing the lawsuit can accomplish a lot without the case ever being heard. For instance, since Karpov doesn’t know whether or not he will have to seriously defend the charge, he will have to divert at least some time and money resources to preparing a defense and possible countersuit.
Those hours and dollars spent will therefore not be available for Karpov’s presidential campaign. All in all, this type of suit is a pretty standard tactic for corporate types and slimeballs.
Would I get sued if I said the leadership of the FIDE were bunch of slimy weasels?

The information about the seizure of the Chess Club property in Moscow in INCORRECT! It was just the other way around:the supporters of Ilyumzhinov, including a certain Mr. Dvorkovich, an aide to the President of Russia,who – by the way- has no legal power to make decisions on behalf of the Russian Chess Federation,ousted the legal head of the Federation, Mr. Bach and his staff from their offices.
