Qc7 Qxc7
Rxe8++
Qc7 Rxd8
Qxe7
caught a mistake as i was posting. i think Qc7 is the best move.
Qc7!! does the trick, taking advantage of the pinned black queen, which can take neither the White queen (…Qxc7, Rxe8++) nor the rook (…Qxd8, Q-g7++), and …Rxd8 hangs the queen.
Overtaxing the queen is the key here. At first I was looking at B-g5, which almost works except that the rook on g2 is unfortunately protecting that square. If it were not, the move would be strong, as the queen can’t take the bishop or the rook is lost. Yet this almost solution led me to see how over-extended were the duties of the queen, and I looked to see if any other move could also displace the queen, and Q-c7 jumped out at me, and I thought, “oh yeah, of course that’s it.”
