Deep moves closer to title

NEW DELHI: Eighth-seeded International Master Deep Sengupta moved closer to claiming the honours in the 47th Doeberl Cup chess tournament after beating 10th-seeded Australian Grandmaster Darryl Johansen in the eighth and penultimate round at the Hellenic Club in Canberra on Sunday.
Deep’s 35-move victory with black pieces raised his tally to seven points and put him half a point clear of England’s C.B. Gawain Jones who defeated Australia’s Xie George Wendi.
In the final round, Deep plays white against compatriot Deepan Chakkravarthy and needs a draw to take the title even in case of a tie. Jones faces Sriram Jha.

IM Deep Sengupta wins the Doeberl Cup
GM Gawain Jones and GM Deepan Chakravarthy take silver and bronze
The 47th edition of the Doeberl Cup International Chess Tournament concluded at Canberra, Australia, today on 13th April 2009. IM Deep Sengupta made it a memorable event for India by winning the first place and gaining his second GM norm in the process. With the same points, but worse tiebreak, finished two more players. Second place once again goes to GM Gawain Jones. GM Deepan Chakravarthy, who beat eventual champion Deep Sengupta in the last round, finished third.
Half a point behind the medalists come the local top players – IM George Xie, IM David Smerdon, and GM Darryl Johansen.
A strong Indian contingent of 15 players participated in this tournament. WFM Pon.N.Nkrithika scored her 3rd and final WIM norm, while the Indian champion WIM Kruttika Nadig finished in top 15 with 5,5 points. Other Indian prize winners were IM Sriram Jha (7th position ) and GM Abhijit Kunte (8th position ).
In the Blitz 960 Chess tournament which was organised on a big scale the Indian IM trio of Satyapragyan, Sriram Jha and K.Rathnakaran got first three positions.
