Bad start for Gata: he was in a bad position right out of the opening. Still, I think he’ll come back — he was second behind Topalov by only .5 points last year, and I don’t think he’s become a patzer since then.
Will Topalov make more excuses for losing?
Gata has really not been getting enough invites into high level chess to keep in sharp practice. When was his last big tournament? Was it last year Mtel?
I do expect Mtel to get him into shape for the Candidates Matches later this month. I do expect him to win over Bacrot.
Mtel is not going to be easy. Shak Mamedyrov is a very good player. But I think Gata went down kind of easy in a sense. After all white was all pawn moves and the 2 knights and had a winning position. Good development by black should have held and maybe won. Black really should have punished white for not developing quickly. But then I am not a world class player.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player better at calculating tactics than Mamedyarov. I think he might just win this one.
I really like the line-up for this tournament. I was getting a little fed up with the endless Kramnik, Anand, Leko, Svidler games. I would have liked to see Judit Polgar playing, perhaps instead of Sasikiran, but that’s just nit-picking.
There should be some really interesting games in this tournament, especially with this non-drawing rule!

Topalov missed the weakness on f4 square while Kamsky went for an unsound piece sacrifice. Interesting games and I hope Gata Kamsky will turn it around rest of tournament. Topalov seems to always be a slow starter. I hope he gets over the slum he has been in and plays the exciting chess we saw a while back.
Mamedyarov is one of the future candidates for WCC title. I agree he was late to develope pieces yesterday, may be he could beat more easily before leting Kamsky to take back sacrificed knight. But at the end of the game Mamedyarov would take a pinned Rook for a Bishop and they would go into a Rook vs Bishop endgame in which Mamed could win again. Kamsky played meaningless by his knight sacrifice.
Coming to Topalov I am not shocked about his blunder, his endgame is horrible!
Great results!!!!
Go Nisipeanu !!!! :)))))
“Drama” !?!!? what drama?
fo Topalow and for Kamsky?
well….you win some, lose some….
Nisipeanu started very well the tournament, after a big error of Topalov in the endgame. Great game!
