White wins after 1) Kf7. If Black tries Kh7,
2) g5 forces Kh8, and now 3) Kxg6 followed by 4) f5 points to an easy win.
1) Kf7, g5 is only a little trickier, but
2) f5, Kh7
3) f6 effectively forces the exchange of pawns, with an easy win in all variations.
Unfortunately, 3.f6 leads to a draw, too, Lenny:
1. Kf7? g5! (the only draw)
2. f5 Kh7
3. f6 gf6! (again the only draw)
4. Kf6 Kg8 (Kh6 and Kh8 also draw)
And now think about it- whenever white does take the pawn at g5, black will immediately play Kg7 for the drawn ending. All black needs to do is to avoid putting the king g7 whenever the white king is on f5 or h5.
1. g5 Kg8
2. Ke7 Kh8
3. Kf8 Kh7
4. Kf7 Kh8
5. Kxg6 Kg8
6. f5 Kf8
7. Kh7 Kf7
8. g6+ Kf6
9. Kh8 Kxf5
10. Kxg7 Ke6
11. Kh8 Kd6
12. g7 Kc5
13. g8=Q (white wins)
1. g5 Kg8
2. Ke7 Kh8
3. Kf8 Kh7
4. Kf7 Kh8
5. Kxg6 Kg8
6. Kf5? Kf7 I couldn’t get 6. f5 with the idea of 7. f6 to work so I backtracked and tried another move at move 6 without looking for anything else.
7. Ke5 g6 ( 7. … Ke7 8. f5 looks okay )
8. Kd6 Kf8
9. Ke6 Kg7
10. Ke7 Kg8
11. Kf6 Kh7
12. Kf7 Kh8
13. Kxg6 and wins
Sorry 7. … Ke7 looks like a draw.
It isn’t a draw- after 7. ……Ke7, white still wins with any move except for 8.Kd4 since black puts the king on e6 and white will make no progress after that.
Thanks very much.
