I tried 1…. Rxg2+ and 1….. Qf3 but no mate in 8. 1…. Nf3+ 2.kh1 Qh6 was also slow the R not cooperating enough.2…. Rh4 fits the bill.

If you are Ruy Lopez I am (KING’S)INDIAN
Zsuzsa also played 2…. Qf4 3.g3 Qh6. Her opponent promptly resigned.Actually it will be mate in 12 moves if 2… Qf4 is played.
1…Nf3+ 2.Kh1 Qf4 3.Qe5 Qxe5 4.gxf3 Rh4 5.f4 Qxf4 6.f3 exf3 7.Ng6+ hxg6 8.Re8+ Kh7 9.Rh8+ Kxh8 10.Rf2 Qxh2+ 11.Rxh2 f2+ 12.Bd5 Bxd5#
Try 2….. Rh4 for mate in 8 moves.
Caution:in (a) after 2.h3 black should not play 2…. Qf4 on account of 3.Qxg7+ Kxg7 4.Ne6+ Kh8 5.Nxf4.
in the actual game also after 1…. Nf3+ 2.Kh1 Qf4 if white plays 3.Qxg7+ it should be replied by 3…. Rxg7 and not 3…. Kxg7
1…Nf3+ 2.Kh1 Rxg2 3.Kxg2 Qg5+ 4.Kh1 Qh5 5.Qxg7+ Kxg7 6.Rg1+ Nxg1
(6…Kxf8 7.Rg2 and there is no immediate mate.)
7.Ne6+ Kf6 8.Kxg1 and no mate in sight.
Under the sun summer of Italy! 1)….; Nf3+ – 2) Kh1; R:g2 – 3) K:g2 (what else?); Qg5+ – 4) Kh1; Qh4 – 5) h3… [melodramatic Q:g7+ { Ng6+; h:g6 – 6) Q:g7+; K:g7 – 7) h3; Qh3# it’s the same…) ; K:g7 – 6) Ne6+; Kh6 or h8 – 7) h3; Qh3#]; Qh3# Why in 8?!
Well, I think in move 5 is better, much better, for Whites 5) Qxg7+ KxQ 6)Rg1+…Then try to checkmate in 2 movements…if you can!
Found! 2) …..; R:g2 – 3) Qe5!; N:e5 – 4) f3 (or f4); e:f3 – 5) Ref2; Ng4 – 6) Bd5; N:f2+ – 7) R:f2; Q:f2 – 8) N:g6; h:g6 – 9) B take in g2 or f3 and mate! 9 moves!! Thank’s
It is the second move that is tough to find, though 2. …..Rxg2 should also lead to mate in a longer variation.

Try 2….. Rh4 for mate in 8 moves.
After 3…. Rh4 it matters if
4.h3 Rxh3+
5.Kg2 Rh2#
I think there are no takers for 1…. Nf6+ 2.Kh1 Rh4. White can avoid immediate mate by (a) 3. h3 or (b)3.gxf3
(a)3.h3 Qd6 4.Qxg7+
(4.Qe5 Qxe5 5.Ng6+ hxg6 6.g3 Rxh3+ 7.Kg2 Rh2#)
4…Kxg7 5.Ne6+ Kh8 6.Nf4 Qxf4 7.g3
(7.gxf3 Rxh3+ 8.Kg2 Qh2#)
7…Rxh3+ 8.Kg2 Rh2#

3 Ng6+ hxg6
4 Kxg2 Qg5+
5 Kh1 Qh5 [Kh3 Qh4+ 6. Kg2 Qxh2#]
6 Qe5 Qxe5
7 any Qh2#
Why 8?
1…Nf3+ 2.Kh1 Rxg2 3.Kxg2 Qg5+ 4.Kh1 Qh5 5.Qxg7+ Kxg7 6.Rg1+ Nxg1
(6…Kxf8 7.Rg2 and there is no immediate mate.)
