From February 1 – 11, 2006, the city of Cuernavaca in Mexico will host a super chess tournament for young chess phenoms. This is the same city that hosted the Karjakin – Nakamura match and one of my simuls last year. I know some of the organizers and sponsors personally. They are very professional and they are a tremedous asset for chess in Mexico.
This year, the field includes:
Ponomariov 2723 (UKR)
Volokitin 2665 (UKR)
Karjakin 2660 (UKR)
Vallejo Pons 2650 (ESP)
Bruzon 2650 (CUB)
Nakamura 2644 (USA)
Dominguez 2638 (CUB)
Cheparinov 2625 (BUL)
Felgaer 2607 (ARG)
Manuel Leon Hoyos 2428 (MEX)
Who is your pick to win the tournament? Who will finish second and third?
Ruslan Ponomariov should win, on the basis of experience, if not just skill. I will root for Paco Vallejo, because he’s not afraid to mix things up; besides, he missed being a WC candidate by the narrowest of margins. If Karjakin were not 16, finishing a supertournament and traveling around the world might be tiring; but perhaps Corus was just a warmup. You wanted three; however, Cheparinov is one to watch.
Ponomariov should walk away with this one. It’s funny, this is called the “Young Masters” but it already seems like Ruslan has been around forever.
If Karajkin still has the energy and fight after Corus, I believe he’ll finish second. Third will either be Pons or Nakamura.
I’m rooting for Hikaru because of his natural talent and also for the reason that I beleive his career in chess will be relatively short.
