Cubans Led by Bruzon to the Continental Chess Championship

Havana, Cuba, Oct 11.- Four Cubans led by GM Lazaro Bruzon, who defends his title, will participate in the Continental Chess Championship to be held in the Argentinean resort of Mar del Plata, starting next Friday.

Cuban Grand Master (GM) Bruzon will try to retain the crown he won in 2011 in Mexico in order to obtain one of the four berths granted by the tournament for the upcoming World Cup.

On that occasion Bruzon ended with 7.5 units in nine rounds, two less than the agreed upon now for the sixth edition of this tournament.

Bruzón also won in 2005, when Buenos Aires hosted the event, with broad participation of Cuba.

Cuba’s squad is completed by the GMs Jesus Nogueiras, Yusnel Bacallao and Isan Ortiz, runner up in the 2010 edition, which didn’t provide places for the World Cup.

The official website of the event confirmed the participation of other known players such as Venezuelan GM Eduardo Iturrizaga, Brazilians Rafael Leitao and Alexander Fier and Bolivian Oswaldo Zambrana.

The United States will attend with Gregory Kaidanov and Alexander Shabalov; Colombia with Sergio Barrientos; Mexico with Gilberto Hernandez; Diego Flores and Rubén Felgaer represent the host country .

A total of 197 players are registered in the preliminary list where appear several females like GM Marta Fierro of Ecuador, and Deysi Cori from Peru .

The competition ends on Oct. 21 and it only includes a doubleheader on the 14th. (ACN)
