Cuban GM Dominguez wins silver medal in Baku Chess Olympiad

Havana, Cuba, Sep 14.- Cuban Leinier Dominguez won the silver medal in the first board of the World Chess Olympiad Baku 2016.

Dominguez (2 720 Elo points) defeated Constantin Lupulescu in the match in which Cuba drew 2-2 with Romania and totaled 7.5 units in 10 games and reached a performance rating of 2 839 points.

That was the parameter that earned him the prize, surpassed only by Georgian Baduur Jobava (2 926/8 points in 10 games) and followed by American Fabiano Caruana (2 838 /7 in 10).

The Caribbean player achieved five wins and an equal number of draws and gained 15.6 points that will be added to his Elo coefficient next October first, when he should climb several steps in the world ranking.

This is only the second medal for a Cuban defending the first board in Chess Olympics, merit not achieved since Jose Raul Capablanca won the crown in the edition of Buenos Aires 1939.

Overall, this is the fourth medal for a Cuban player after Reynaldo Vera won the title in the third board of Elista 1998 and Isan Ortiz was silver medalist in the fourth board in Tromso 2014. (acn)
