Campion B, Wolmer’s Girls favoured for chess playoffs

THE Jamaica Chess Federation’s 2009/2010 chess season continues today with the start of the second phase of the Corporate Area Schools’ Chess Championships at the Campion College library.

Eight teams that placed second and third in their respective zones in the Corporate Area preliminaries will attempt to secure one of four remaining berths in the quarter-finals.

The eight teams include Wolmer’s Girls, Calabar A, Campion B, Calabar B, Camperdown B, Kingston College A, Kingston College B and Campion C.

The teams will be competing in a three-round Swiss playoff, scheduled to start at 9:00 am.

Campion College B and Wolmer’s Girls start as favourites to take the top spots, including two of the quarter-final berths.

The top four teams from the playoff will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face the teams that placed first in each of the Corporate Area Zones. The teams that have already qualified for the quarter-finals by placing first in their zones include Camperdown A, Campion College A, Wolmer’s Boys and Ardenne.
