For some reason, the United States did not have a single participant, boy or girl.
Anya Corke, the 2005 Susan Polgar National Invitational Co-Champion finished in a tie for 23rd place. Anya, a US citizen, is currently representing Hong Kong at the moment. She is the #1 rated girl under 16 in the United States.
Was Nakamura eligible to play?
Of course. So are other US players.
There is little to no money in Junior world championship. Many junior players who have already tasted success in the adult arena are no longer interested in age-limited tournaments. It’s much better to make a few bucks elsewhere.
Radjabov, Harikrishna, Karjakin, Volokitin, Cheparinov and of course, Nakamura all have bigger and more expensive fish to fry.
I’m really surprised a pro like Mamedyarov chose to play in this no-money tournament. Either (a) His federation chipped in with participation fees for the prestige of having an Azeri world champion, or (b) He’s treating it as a warm-up before the World Cup?
Mamedyarov is not just a ‘pro’ or a chess player, he is also a human being. His sister was playing in the girls event. It is logical that he was there to support her.
Susan, are you sure Anya Corke is a US citizen?
I thought she was a Hong Kong citizen.
Her father is American. She was born in California. Her parents moved to Hong Kong due to their jobs. She is a lovely young lady.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar
