Clinics to prepare women’s chess squad

THE Fiji Chess Federation (FCF) will hold weekly clinics to try and help the national women’s team which is preparing for international competition this year.

FCF president Dr Virgilio de Asa said the main focus of the training clinics was to prepare our women’s squad.

“The aim of the sessions is to prepare our women’s squad for the first Fiji International Open Championship that will be held from May 5 to May 11 and eventually prepare the four-member women’s team that will be named after the Fiji International for the Istanbul Chess Olympiad in August.”

He said the sessions for the women’s aquad would deal more on tactics and strategies, basic principles and theories on Chess Openings, Middlegame Combinations and Endgames.

Last year’s clinics was held from October to December proved to be a success and 11 of the current 12 member women’s squad attended the clinics.

de Asa revealed the clinics will be held at the level four foyer of the Tappoo City complex.

de Asa also said two different clinics will be conducted this Sunday from 3pm to 5pm.

“Starting this Sunday, FCF will be conducting two separate chess clinics for beginners (young and old) and Advanced Chess Sessions for our Women’s Olympiad squad of 12 players,” he said.

“The chess clinics for beginners is an ABC introductory course on how to learn to play chess. It is open to anybody boys and girls, young and old, interested to learn the basic fundamentals of chess.”

“There will be no fees for both clinics which will run every Sunday from 3 pm to 5pm, except on some scheduled Sunday tournaments.”

de Asa has called on interested participant to take good advantage of the free clinics offered by FCF.

“Interested enthusiasts and future chess masters should take advantage of these chess clinics and learn to play the art and science of chess.”

“The clinics will be conducted by Candidate Master (CM) Calvin Prasad, CM Manoj Kumar, Goru Arvind, Gloria Sukhu and other chess stalwarts,” he said.
