ChessCube Launches $3,000 online ‘WarZone’ Chess Tournament Series

Cape Town, South Africa – 18 January2011

ChessCube, the world leader in online chess tournaments, with over 20,000 tournaments per month, has just launched a $3,000 online series. The $3,000 ‘WarZone’ Chess Series has two sections and will be run over two weeks, from 17 to 30 January. To level the playing fields, the under-1800 section has time handicaps as well as point scoring handicaps, which means anyone can win! The Elite section also has time handicaps to give the lower-rated player a great chance against the higher-rated opponent in every game.Using a model normally only seen in Poker tournaments, the $3,000 Warzone Series is made up of a series of satellite or qualifying events, where some players can win tickets into the next tier. Players who prefer to fast-track may also buy directly into any tier at successively higher entry fees.

Mark Levitt, CEO and founder of ChessCube says, “We are very excited at the take-up of our online events. Our tournament numbers have surpassed every expectation, and our goal for 2011 is to host over 50,000 online chess tournaments per month.

ChessCube made world chess history with its sponsorship of the 2009 South African Open. Along with the 400 participants at a Cape Town venue, for the first time in history, two grandmasters and an International master participated from a second venue in Melbourne, Australia. FIDE, the world chess federation, worked with ChessCube to ensure that the games, which were played across the Internet, were officially rated, setting a new precedent that could see tournaments using this technology in the future.

“We intend to continually enrich and improve our online tournament capability”, said Levitt. “We are now working with a number of partners to host live chess tournaments, powered by ChessCube, on their own websites.”

ChessCube continues to innovate and build on its award-winning online chess platform from its Cape Town headquarters.
