I’ve read the book (in translation) “I play against the pieces” and thought it was not a good translation. It may be literally correct, but isn’t what Gligoric trying to express is that he “played against the board and not the man”? That is he was focused on the board and didn’t worry too much about who his opponent was.

No elite grandmaster plays like this anymore. If he did he would fall from the elite ranks.
Perhaps the majority of chess study that elite grandmasters must do nowadays is understand and memorize the opening tendencies of the opponents they will likely face in the coming days or weeks.
That issue is one reason why Gligoric wrote his book “Shall We Play Fischerandom Chess?”.
