Which player said the following when asked: “From which chess book have you learned the most?”
“Kramnik’s collection of games is impressing and very good. I have learned a lot from reading that book.” But he added that he “never really had any role models in chess” and “my favorite player is still myself.”

I don’t know! But allow me to guess!
1. Vladimir Kramnik, or
2. Robert James Fischer, or
3. USCF President (forgot his name), or
4. Bill Gates, or
5. Veselin Topalov
Cheers! Thanks for the exquisite blog, thanks so many times!
I doubt it’s him , but it could be Etienne Bacrot , he also said something along those lines (no role models or favourite GM )
it was Magnus!!
Definitely Magnus Carlsen.
When I first began to play, I studied the games of Paul Morphy and they really helped me. I’ve since studied “My System” and dozens of others that have improved my play including dozens of different tactical and endgame books.
However, upon reflection, Morphy’s games really made me realize (at that time a young player) the importance of development and attack.
You must crawl before you walk…and in chess, Morphy helped all modern GM’s “crawl before they walk.” They have studied his games….most current GM’s, at least.
Magnus is way to humble to say “my favorite player is still myself”. It needs to be someone more eccentric like Ivanchuk or Topalov but yet young enough to have benefited from Kramnik games.
I could see Magnus saying “never really had any role models in chess” but I would really be surprised if he said “my favorite player is still myself” that just seems to self assorbed statement for Magnus.
By the way Carlsen is my favorite player and has been for coming up on 2 years.
It may be Cheparinov lol :)Kidding sure if he says something positive about Kramnik surely Topalov will kick out him haha. By the way the win of Kramnik was immmmpppresssive over Topalov yesterday.
My guess is may be Fritz 11 said this :)))
Nakamura maybe?
I don’t know… I agree though that it probably wasn’t Magnus.
It was Magnus Carlsen. The entire interview is here: ChessBase Interview
It may be Carlsen as people say. However, I am totaly surprised that nobody thought of Karjakin! He is after all young enough to admire Kramnik (as Carlsen), strong enough to believe that his favorite player is himself. Moreover, Karjakin is positional player, and thus more likely to like players like Karpov and Kramnik.
Magnus was only 13 when he said it, which kinda explains it. 🙂
