Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshall, Lasker and Tarrasch
From left to right:
Emanual Lasker
Alexander Alekhine
Jose R. Capablanca
Frank Marshall
Edward Lasker
How’d I do?
Brad H.
The Ritz brothers.
Now, thats an easy one for a change, from left to right – sitting Lasker, standing Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshal and sitting Tarrasch
I bet on that
Yes, i can!
In front sitting from left to right:
Lasker and Tarrasch
Behind them standing from left to right: Aljechin, Capablanca, Marshall
Standing: Alekhine, Capablanka, Marshall
Seated: Lasker and ??? (maybe Tarrasch)
I think the three standing players are, from left to right- Alekhine (about 95% sure), Capablanca (100% sure), and Frank Marshall (about 90% sure).
If I am right, then the guy on the left who is sitting is probably Lasker. I have no clue to the other person sitting is.
Lasker, Rubinstein, Alekhin, Capablanka, and… Duz-Xotemirskiy?
I see Marshall, Capablanca and Lasker. Don’t know who the other two are.
Lasker and Capablanca are easy enough to recognize. I’d assume the other 3 are Alekhine, Marshall, and Tarrasch.
Lasker, Alekhine, Capablaca, Marshall but I’m guessing at the dude seated across Lasker. (Tarrasch??)

Lasker, Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshall, Tarrasch
Standing: Alekhine, Capablanca & Marshall; Sitting: Lasker and Tarrasch
Clockwise from the uniform: Alekhine, Cabablanca, Marshall, Tarrasch, and Lasker. Did they dress this way to play, or for the photo?
I believe they’re Lasker, Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshall and Tarrasch.
I think they are (from left to right)
Em. Lasker-Alekhine-Capablanca-Marshall-Tarrasch.
I’m not sure of Marshal…
Hint:
These are the original five GMs. The title was invented for them and given by the Russian Zar himself.
Is that the original 5 grandmasters from St. Petersburg?
Alekhine
Marshall
Capablanca
Tarrasch
Lasker
Lasker, Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshall, ?
That looks like it must be from St Petersburg 1914. Lasker, Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshall, and Tarrasch.
Right to left : Lasker, Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshall and Tarrasch during St Petersbourg international chess tournament in 1914.
Looks like Kaskar, ???, Capablanca, Marshall, Tarrasch.
It looks like Lasker and Janowski at the board with someone I don’t recognize along with Capablanca and Marshall in the background. I assume its from San Sebastian 1911.
It’d be great if there was a way to find the answers after the quiz, I’d love to learn more about the chess celebrities posted in the quizes.
Lasker Tarrasch Alekhine Capablanca and Marshall
Pienso que son Lasker, Alekhine y Capablanca (de izq. a derecha). A los otros no los reconozco.
L-R: Lasker, Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshall, Tarrasch
Standing Alekhine,Capablanca,Marshall.
Seated Lasker and Tarrasch?
This must have been taken at St. Petersburg, 1914. Standing are Alexander Aljechin, Jose Capablanca and Frank Marshall. Seated are Emanuel Lasker and Siegbert Tarrasch.
Oh my God! It is a picture of St Petersburg tournament 1914. Standing from left to right: Alekhine, Capablanca and Marshall. Sitting: Lasker and Tarrasch
Lasker, Marshall, Tarrasch, Alekhine and Capablanca
Emanuel Lasker , Tarrasch,

I love this picture.
Emanuel Lasker
Alexander Alekhine
Jose Raul Capablanca
Frank J. Marshall
Siegbert Tarrasch
Probably at the 1914 St. Petersburg Tournament. Alekhine was 22 years old at the time.
Standing l to r are Alekhine,Capablanca and Marshall.
At the table are l to r Em Lasker and Tarrasch.

Lasker, Alekhine, Capablanca, Marshall, Tarrasch
St. Petersburg 1914
This is a very historical picture: seated, left to right: Lasker and Tarrasch; standing, left to right: Alekhine, Capablanca, and Marshall. If I remember well, this is from Saint Petersburg, 1914, won by Lasker. These were the five finalists.
It is surprising to me that Tarrasch was still alive then. Tarrasch wrote the first chess instruction book I read as a teenager.
If this was from the St. Petersburg tourney of 1914, then it was just prior to the outbreak of World War I.
“The first grandmasters of chess…”
Someone should invent a new title today to recognize the truly elite today….
There are more grandmasters than
stinkbugs….
