June 25, 2009

NUNDAH; The Nundah State School will proudly wear its reputation as a chess stronghold when the action begins in two major tournaments on June 30. The Queensland juniors chess tournament will decide the leading maroons in the under-8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18 categories.

Nundah will also host the Australian junior elite chess training squad comprising 30 young players, many of whom are either national age champions or previous national representatives.

Eight of the children attending the training squad, including Nundah State’s 10-year-old maestro Callum Gray, will represent Australia in November at the world youth chess championships in Turkey.

The children attending the squad will receive coaching and post-game analysis from grand masters and international masters. The Queensland junior tournament runs from June 30-July 3 and the elite training squad is on from July 6-11.
