1.Nd5! 1-0
I like the look of that passed pawn, so we must block the retreat of the rook to stop it.
e.g.
1. Nd5 (or Bd5)
and if a pawn captures then h7 and a queen next move. If the rook captures then recapture with the other piece and the pawn cannot be stopped.
Moving either N or B to d5 looks good, preventing the Black R from moving to d8, followed by pushing the h pawn (or 2. N/Bxd5 first, if Black takes the N with the R). It might be good to choose 1.Nd5 to avoid any chance of a mate on h1, and to remove it from attack from the b pawn. Phil
1.Bd5 wins!
From Spain…
1)Bd5 win
1)…,ed5
2)h7
Greetings from Spain
That’s a nice position. Black has no serious threats, White threatens to queen on h8, which Black could only prevent fast enough with Rd8. So I’d play 1. Bd5, and if Black takes whith a pawn, the d-line is blocked. If 1.- Rxd5 2. Bxd5 and nothing helps again 3. h7 and 4. h8.
block the rook with the bishop so the pawn can advance?
Nd5
Of course Nd5 makes the necessary blockade for the h pawn. Nice!
Bd5 RxB
NxR and the h pawn cannot be stopped
h7 wins. Black must puts his rook on h8. White can then march his king up to capture rook.
1. Nd5 cuts off access to the 8th rank for the rook so black cannot prevent the pawn from queening.
1. … ed (or cd)
2. h7 and queens.
1. … Rxd5
2. Bxd5 and queens the h pawn.
1. Bd5 may work as well.
Nd5. The rook cannot then get to d8 to stop the h-pawn.
Ad5
Nd5 will block the rook and h pawn can queen
Blocking up the d file at d5 should work for a win:
1. Nd5 cd5 (or Rd5 2.Bd5 cd5 3.h7)
2. h7 and the pawn queens. I don’t see any defense for black, unless I am still as blind as I was this morning. Not an impossibility.
Hmmmm. The only real question here is whether Nd5 or Bd5 is the strongest move. I’m partial to Nd5, since I’d rather keep the bishop, and I don’t see any drawbacks from this.
Lucy
Nd5 blocks the rook and nobody can stop the h pawn. Due to the closed position White will have to work a bit for the point but will be successfull. Perhaps one should start with pickung up the f7 …
