Hi Susan,
1. Rxf7 is the killer.
If 1 … Kxf7 then 2. Qe6 mate
If 1 … Rxf7 then 2 Rc8+ Rf8 3. Qe6+ leads to mate
Thanks
Tom

Qe6 looks very strong.
Is there any defense against 2. Rxf7, Rxf7 3. Rc8+ (which also wins if black plays 1. -, Qb8).
Seems to easy have I overseen anything?

I think …

1) r* F7 r*F7
2) rC8 + rF8
3) qE6
IF 1) …. K *f7
2) Qe6#
1. Qe6 doesnt win because Black can play Qa6 covering the c8 square.
After 1. Qe6 Qa6
2. Rc8 g6
White can’t win.

I say Qe6 doesn’t work because of 1… g6!
After 1… Qa6? 2. Rxf7! and how is Black going to save the game?
The correct move is 1. Rxf7 and we saw that 1… Rxf7 doesn’t help. Only 1… g6 or g5 gives Black a few moves before death. 2. Rxf8 Kxf8 etc… The Black king won’t run very far.
