Fischer Random Chess
An interesting Tournament format suggestion:
Determine the random position 1/2 hour before start.
All rounds of the tournament will take place with the same position.
This gives players a chance to try and unleash some home-preparation during the coarse of hte tournament. This will make the games much more deeply thought-out towards the end of the tournament.
It will also make chess sponsors like Fritz etc. happy: as they need a reason to sell their stuff!
Fischer Random for sure!
The comparison is equivalent to compare talent versus preparation.
“talent versus preparation”.
With the proposed tournament format in the first anonymous comment, we can even test the talent for preparation dueing the tournament.
Both.
Classical Chess should always be regular chess. It is interesting to study the various lines in different openings. Fischer Random may be a part of the rapid chess scene. Of course there should be a rating system established for Rapid Chess too.
I am not going to bother to vote on this poll. If you’re promoting Random Chess, then quit chess altogether.
The problem is a lot of people feel threatened by the thought of FischerRandomChess. They have the benefit of the well known perception that current chess players are acknowledged geniuses. Anything else is fighting an uphill battle: qualifying FRC as a dumb idea is very easy: as this form of chess does not have any history of known geniuses.
“I am not going to bother voting
=> this form of chess is an insult to his intelligence.
*sigh* as I said: its going to be an uphill battle against such outright dismissals.
We will have to start building a history.. start having tournaments.. ratings etc. etc.
Regular chess for rest of us.
The randomness will take away some beauty from chess.
Tandom chess (2 or three person per team) or bughouse chess would be interesting.
Speed chess is another good one.
Fischer Random, because it would make chess less painful to study as you wouldn’t need to memorize openings. It forces everyone to think for themselves, so quality of play increases.
Gothic Chess.
🙂
What I like about chess is going as deep as possible into a position and trying to play the best possible move. This is true for both FRC and classical chess. The only difference is that for classical chess, I have the benefit of many other players’ years of experience and analysis. There is just something nice about knowing that I am playing strong opening moves, and understanding why they are strong, and this is part of the attraction of classical chess for me.
Nevertheless, I find FRC attractive in its own way, for the reason that it is challenging finding good opening moves on your own, without any hindsight. I find both forms of chess enjoyable and would like to see a happy situation where both can coexist.

I think that long experienced players could be afraid of throw all his painful years of study (along with his books and databases) direct to the trash can
regular chess of course
I have a small group of friends who once in a while play “team chess” — 2 vs 2 or 2 vs 3 or 3 vs 3 or whatever. The rules are that no one can discuss the position until after the game is over. You just play your move when it is your turn. It is an interesting learning experience–meshing styles.
I’m all for Fischer random chess in the database age when one’s memory is seeming to begin to trump one’s imagination. It is the imaginative spark that we love about Tal and the game in general, and Fischer random could usher in a sort of Renaissance.
I second the vote for Gothic Chess it is amazing in my opinion.
http://www.GothicChess.com all the way!
I knew nothing about Gothic Chess until she mentioned it here. It’s pretty cool. Why don’t you have Susan play Karpov or Fischer a match? I would pay to see it.
There’s no need for extra pieces, files, and squares.
