ISLAMABAD: The newly-elected President of Chess Federation of Pakistan (CFP) Abdus Salim Khan has called upon the higher authorities to increase the annual grant of the federation as for the betterment of the game in the country.

Talking to APP on Friday, he said the annual grant of CFP is two lakh rupees for the last five years and has not been increased by the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB).

“With this grant we cannot do anything for the promotion and development of chess in Pakistan,” he said adding that even organizing a local national chess event costs up to ten to fifteen lakh rupees.

“Participating at international events costs too much and grant of two lakh rupees is a very small amount,” he said.

Abdus Salim said the PSB takes decisions to increase the grant of the federations on the bases of political affiliation. “Nepotism should be avoided and funds should be released on merit and on equal ground,” he said.

He said that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has been helping CFP for the promotion of the game in the universities. “But we too want chess to be played in schools and colleges and for that we are working,” he added.

However the president said the newly elected CFP office bearers are fully committed to do everything for the improvement of the game in the country.

The newly elected CFP office bearers include Abdus Salim Khan of Khyber Pakhtonkhawa (President), Dr. Naeem Hamid Mirza of Punjab (secretary), Aziz Baloch of Balochistan (Senior Vice President), Mohammad Ali Batur (Finance Secretary) while Muhammad Aslam from Sindh, Dr. Nadeem Khan of Khyber Pakhtokhawa and Rashid Mahmood Butt of Pakistan Railways were elected as Vice Presidents.
