Like Basketball, Chess Offers Excitement To Educated Fans

There are few more exciting moments in sports than a basketball game that is decided by a decisive defensive play or incredible shot as time runs out.

Implausible as it seems, chess has such moments, too. Chess games also have their ticking time clock which showcases both human frailty and heroism.

I recall moments during the legendary Fischer-Spassky Match of 1972, when the audience in Reykjavik, Iceland, and those watching the move-by-move presentation of the games on PBS could only gasp and cheer in response to the unexpected and inspired moves of the players. Of course, a sophisticated grasp of the game or a skilled commentator is often, but not always, necessary to appreciate such moments.

Sports are a metaphor for life in which heroism plays a major role. We are inspired by our heroes, because human life is essentially heroic. Most acts of heroism, of course, go unnamed and unnoticed.
