Chess, chess and more chess in Lubbock before summer vacation

On May 8, nearly 100 players competed in the fifth Get Smart! Play Chess! tournament at the Science Spectrum in Lubbock in six separate sections: K-2, K-5, K-8, K-12, Novice, and Open Adult. Most of the players are from the local areas but some came as far as Midland/Odessa and El Paso to take place in this exciting event. This is also the last chess tournament before the summer vacation.

Here are the top five finishers in five of the six sections:

K-2 section

Fourth annual CIS (Communities in Schools – South Plains) Chess Tournament

On the morning of May 14, around 60 students from a number of schools in the area came to Cavazos Middle School to compete in the fourth annual CIS Chess Tournament. First Eastgate Invitational Team Chess Tournament for LISD Title I Elementary Schools

This special team invitational event was held in late afternoon on May 14th at the Lubbock ISD headquarters. This was the brainchild of Mr. Eric Strong and the event was run by Texas Tech SPICE. There were a total of eight teams (four players plus reserves) from six different elementary schools (39 students) participating in a knockout format
