Chess can bring much glory to country, says GM Quader Commerce Minister GM Quader has said that chess can bring much glory to the country if patronised properly, reports UNB. 

He said this while inaugurating the 38th National ‘A’ Chess Championship-2012 at the Bangladesh Olympic Association Media Centre in the city Thursday. 

The Minister made the statement following Bangladesh’s success in the 40th Chess Olympiad-2012 in Istanbul, Turkey in which Bangladesh finished the 33rd in the men’s round among 158 countries. 

 Bangladesh has also made history as they became first among the SAARC nations and 6th among Asia in the Istanbul Chess Olympiad. 

 “In the recent past, Bangladesh became champion in the Indian International Grandmaster chess competition.” the Minister said adding that “The government alone can not provide all the assistance to promote chess in the country, the NGOs and the rich must come forward for the patronisation.” 

Meanwhile, matches of the 14-man 38th National ‘A’ Chess Championship were in progress while writing this report. The round-robin league event is being sponsored by Health Care Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Tk 50,000 cash prize money will be given to the winner.
