Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) will roll out a registration exercise to establish a database for all chess players in the country.

Chessam publicity secretary Gilton Mkumbwa said each player is supposed to pay K2,000 to be registered.

Mkumbwa said unregistered players will not be allowed to participate in all Chessam organised competitions.

“The ban will also be extended to the regional leagues. We hope players will comply so that they should not be embarrassed. The players can pay registration fee through our regional committees,” he said.

The Chessam publicity secretary said the database would help them keep records of players.

“This will also help us evaluate on whether we are progressing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chessam has announced that they will hold Chess Olympiad regional qualifiers in three weeks time.

Regional champions are expected to qualify for the national event to be staged in Mzuzu during the Easter holiday.

“We are still in planning process. After our discussions we will give out full details concerning our trip to Turkey where Chess Olympiad will be held,” Mkumbwa said.

The Chessam publicists said they might select 11 players including five women for the Turkey trip.

“We want to give all players equal opportunities. In recent times we have witnessed a rise in number of women chess players and it is important to give them a chance,” he said.
