This is a very unusual painting. Scary.
The tin can tells us that it’s less than 150 years old. It looks like calculation and law play against phantasy and luck (see the dice), but I haven’t seen this painting before.
Since they are not playing chess, this cannot count as a stumping of the bloggers! Next?

My first guess was that this is by Marcel Duchamp – few non chess players would have chosen this particular position.
Maybe the poster for the 3rd French Chess Championship, Nice, 1925 … no, it’s not.
What about Salvador Dali – keen on fried eggs …
Or something Harry Potterish: there’s a mistake on the blackboard, so the spell will probably not work.

The open sardine can and the modern algebraic notation is moderately recent. I would guess less than say 80 years. from 1940. But it is probably much more modern from the way the characters are painted.
I would take a wild guess and say it is fairly recent. Probably since 1980 or even 1990.
