Playing chess keeps the mind sharp

THE VILLAGES — When looking for a game that really exercises your thinking power, turn to chess.

A group of Villagers does not regret the move.

“It is a great game to keep your mind active,” Tony Cottell said. “Chess is the wellness center for the brain.”

Cottell, a Village of Country Club Hills resident who offers quick answers to questions, has been a chess player for at least 60 years. He is also former treasurer of the United States Chess Federation and former president of the New Jersey State Chess Federation.

Cottell is certified by the United States Chess Federation as a national tournament director. This is the highest national certification in chess.

With those prestigious credits, Cottell must be an awesome chess player.

Not so.

“I’m just an average player,” he said.

Regardless, Cottell’s certification may come in handy when The Villages Chess Club conducts its first chess tournament Sept. 13 at Saddlebrook Recreation Center. The tournament is an open event; there is a $1 entry fee.

Cottell and other chess club members talked Friday at Paradise Recreation Center about the upcoming tournament. They also engaged in some games of chess.
