Young chess masters go four rounds
First Sister City tourney fundraiser for exchange

Kindergartners and adults battled through four rounds of chess during the first Sister City Chess Championship on Saturday at Oveal Williams Senior Center.
The four-round tournament gave 60 participants the chance to earn United States Chess Federation points while giving the city’s Sister City budget a boost.
“The reason we chose to sponsor the chess tournament is chess is a game that has no linguistic barriers,” said Ellen Murry, fundraising chairwoman for the program’s steering committee. “You can be in a plaza in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a shopping mall in Yokosuka, Japan, or anywhere in Europe and sit down, open a chess board and start playing with anyone.”
