Siddharth upsets GM Ziaur Rahman; shares lead with Russian GM

CHENNAI: Untitled Indian teenager R Siddharth upset GM Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh to share the lead with Russian Grandmaster Maxim Turov at the end of the fifth round of the Chennai Open 2010 International Grandmaster Chess Tournament on Thursday.
Siddharth and Turov led the pack with five points each and were followed by 13 players with 4.5 points apiece in the second spot of the Swiss format tourney.
Adopting an Old Indian game, Turov systematically outplayed IM Oliver Dimakiling of Phillipines. After winning a pawn on the queenside, Turov slowly built a strong position to outplay Dimakiling in 40 moves.
Siddharth faced the irregular queen pawn opening of GM Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh, who came up with some unorthodox moves in the opening to confuse the Indian.
But, Siddharth displayed maturity in handling the situation and steadily regrouped his pieces in going for a rook exchange with a clever pawn break on the kingside.
Once he managed to get a central passed pawn, the Indian boy used his knights in a masterly way to corner his renowned rival. Finally, faced with the inevitable mate, Zia resigned on the 74th move.
Amongst the other Indian players, Anwesh Upadhyaya and Ankit Rajpara, who were leading the table on Wednesday, continued their fine run holding GM Marat Dzhumaev and IM Bitoon Richard to draw respectively to take the second spot.

Official Bulletin of AICF.published,
R. Siddharth of Tamil Nadu on song
By R.Anantharam, International Arbiter & Media Incharge
Former under age category national champion R. Sidharth of Tamil Nadu displayed a giant killing act defeating Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh in the fifth round of the Chennai Open 2010 International chess tournament sponsored by LIC of Indian and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation and organised by Sports Promotion Foundation at the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Chennai today. He and the second seeded grandmaster Maxim Turov of Russia are leading with a cent per cent score. Thirteen players are trailing behind with 4.5 points each. Six more rounds remain to be played.
Siddharth today proved that his increase in rating by 105 points in three months last year was not a flash in the pan. The engineering student pursuing his MS degree in US played a patient waiting game and overcame Ziaur by positional play. His pair of knights played havoc to rattle the opponent and in the end, he had three pawns, of which two were connected, in comparison to the isolated pawns of Ziaur. Siddharth won the game in 49 moves.
Maxim won the English opening comfortably against Oliver Dimakiling of Philippines using his powerful connected pawns at the centre. Mehar Chenna Reddy claimed honours when he won the queen and pawn ending against experienced R.R. Laxman, the grandmaster representing ICF. The national Blitz champion Lakshman lost a pawn first and another pawn later. When Mehar was about to queen his pawn, Laxman resigned. Overnight joint leaders Anwesh Upadyaya of Orissa and Ankit Rajpara of Gujarat were content with draws against grandmaster Marat Azhumaev of Uzbekistan and IM Richard Bitoon of Philippines to stay in contention for their IM norms.
Eshan Ghaem Maghami of Iran, the top seed had his third draw in five rounds, this time against former under 14 national champion T.U. Navin Kanna of Tamil Nadu. Grandmasters Dmitry Kryakvin of Russia, Alexander Zubraev of Ukraine, Sundarrajan Kidambi and Deepan Chakkaravarthy of PSPB, Andrey Gutov of Russia and Manik Mikulas had a field day today, scoring easy win. G.V. Sai Krishna, under 13 national champion in 2008 caused a flutter by defeating former national champion P. Konguvel of PSPB. Six times national woman champion S. Vijayalaksmi settled for a draw with T.J. Suresh Kumar of ICF.

With his fifth round win, Siddharth shares the lead with Maxim Turov of Russia.
Chennai: Chennai’s R. Siddharth played an outstanding end-game to upset Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh on Thursday and maintain full score after five rounds in the Chennai Open International Grand Masters chess tournament.
Siddharth jointly leads the tournament with second seed Maxim Turov of Russia on five points.
Siddharth — who has one International Master norm and will be looking for the second one in this event — gets white in the game that will decide the first sole leader of this contest.
13 in second spot
Thirteen players are tied for the second spot with 4.5 points, and this includes seven Indians — Lalith Babu, Anwesh Upadhyaya, Deepan Chakravarthy, Ankit Rajpara, Roy Chowdhury, Swapnil Dhopade and S. Kidambi.
The 29th seeded Siddharth made a significant pawn break on move 27 that helped him create a passed pawn in the centre. He darted his king swiftly into the centre to outclass Rahman, the sixth seed, in 74 moves.
Teenaged Anwesh accepted a sacrificed rook for minor piece early on and surprised Grandmaster Dzhumaev with his strong play. When the Grand Master counterattacked, Anwesh took a draw by perpetually checking the Uzbek player.
Ankit Rajpara, 15, continued to make waves by holding higher rated IM Richard Bitoon of the Philippines in a level rook ending after 53 moves.
The high scorers among women so far are S. Meenakshi and Nafisa Muminova of Uzbekistan on four points. That was after Nisha Mohota (3.5) was defeated by Swapnil Dhopade in the fifth round.
Among other upset results, Chennai’s Navin Kanna held top seed Ghaem Maghami to a draw.
