1.Rxf8+ KxR
2.Rc8+
And black has three options:
a) 2…Kf7
3.Qf5#
b)2….Rd8
3.RxR + QxR
4.QxP+ Kf8 (or Ke8)
5.Qf7#
c) 2….Qd8
3.RxQ+ RxR+
4.QxP+ Kf8 (Ke8)
5.Qf7#
Henry, one of us has something garbled. In both b) and c) — what’s “4.QxP+” all about? 4.Qxe6 isn’t check, and you can’t mean 4.Qxg7+. “4…Kf8” confuses me, too — isn’t Black’s king already on f8?
By the way, I think White has a mate in 8 from the starting position, not 9. Before I accuse Susan of a typo, though, I want to re-check my analysis some more.

Or you get accused of using computer?
Opps, you’re right.
Well, what about,
1.Rc8?
1. Rxf8+ , Kxf8
2. Rc8+ , Td8 ( Rf7, 3. Df4# )
3. Rxd8+ , Qxd8
4. Bxd8 , Ke8
5. Qd6 , Kf7
6. Qxd6+ , Kf8
7. Qe7# or Qf7#
Best regards
1.Rxf8+ Kxf8
2.Rc8+ Rd8
3.Rxd8+ Qxd8
4.Bxd8 Ke8
4…Nc6 puts the moment of reckoning off a little further, although those are the same first four moves I came up with for White.
1. Rxf8+ , Kxf8
2. Rc8+ , Rd8 ( Kf7, 3. Qf4# )
3. Rxd8+ , Qxd8
4. Bxd8 , Nc6
5. Qd6+ , Ke8
6. Bxe6 , ??? ( Ne7, 7. Qxe7#)
( Ne5, 7. Qe7#)
7. Dd7+ , Kf8
8. Qf7#
Best regards
PD.: Sorry for :
2. Rc8+ , Td8 ( Rf7, 3. Df4# )
but I’m Spanish and notation is different. thx.
Sorry again.
7. Qd7+ , Kf8
regards
No apology necessary — I knew what you meant. ¡Y su inglés es mucho mejor que mi español!
FWIW,
D = queen
T = rook
are the same in German.
everybody is saying something who is right ?!!!
Tks
Luca fm Italy
Luca,
jmlasso’s analysis is correct.
yes, but one clarification is missing: after 6.Be6 not every move of black is followed by Qd7-Qf7X or mate in one (as mentioned), since black has 6.. Nxd8 after which f7 is protected.
But white has: 7. Qd7+ Kf8 8.Qd8X
So it seems OK
its possible that im not seeing something, but isnt this rite
1. Bxe6+ Qxe6
2. Qxe6+ Rf7
3. Qxf7 mate…
could someone explain where i went wrong
