1. Rxf7+ mates, I am not sure if it’s done in 9 moves.
1. -, Kxf7 is forced 2. Rc7+
[Now Re7 3. Qxe7+, Kg6 4. Rc6+ gives qick mate, same does Kf6 3. Qf4+, Kg6 4. Qf7+, Kg5/h5 5. Rc5+.]
Kf8 3. Qh7! and I do not see a way to rescue the black king.
Nonsense checks (Rg2+, Re2+, Rg2+, Qb2+, Q+) cost white 5 moves so it is mate in 9 moves.
I don’t feel black can rescue himself “over time” by giving the right checks (e.g. Qc2+ to deflect the queen – I think she returns in time) but I didn’t calculate verything out, perhaps I even overlooked a good defense for black after the silent Qh7.
While typig all this I see 3. Qf4+ is so much easier and quicker mate (I won’t delete the whole text as it was much work ;))…
Is it mate in only 9 moves for sure? What is black’s longest defense?
I can name that tune in eleven notes. 1.Rxf7+ is my choice too, but I don’t see the nine move mate.
I think it is checkmate in 6 moves and not 9
1Rxf7 Ktahes then
2 Qh7+ and mate follows in 6 moves
1Rxf7 Ktahes then
2 Qh7+ and mate follows in 6 moves
Show us, show us. 1.Rxf7+ Kxf7 2.Qh7+ Kf6. Now what? You have seven more moves before you turn into a pumpkin.
Very sorry all.I missed this line! Susan is right! It does takes 9 moves to mate!
1Rxf7+ Kxf7
2Qh7+ Kf6
3Qxh6+ Kf7
4Rc7+ Re7
5Qh7+ KF6
6Qxe7+ Kg6
7Rc6+ Qe6
8Rxe6 Kh5
9Qh4mate!
1Rxf7+ Kxf7
2Qh7+ Kf6
3Qxh6+ Kf7
Sure, sure. Now let’s try it with 3…Ke7. You have six more moves, and the clock is ticking ….
Playing against Fritz:
1. Rxf7+ Kxf7 2. Qf5+ Ke8 3. Rxe6+ Qxe6 4. Qxe6+ Kf8 5. Qxa2 Kg7 6. Kg4 c2 7.Qxc2 Kf8 8. Qc7 Ke8 9. Kf5 h5 10. Kf6 h4 11. Qe7# 1-0
playing against Sjeng:

playing against Sjeng:
1. Rxf7+ Kxf7 2. Rc7+ Ke8 3. Qh7 Rg2+ 4. Kxg2 Re2+ 5. Kg3 Rg2+ 6. Kxg2 Qa2 7.Kg3 Qg2+ 8. Kxg2 any move 9. mate
Looks good! Some of Black’s spite checks can be transposed or trivially altered, but that doesn’t change the outcome.
1. Rxf7+ Kxf7 2. Rc7+ Ke8 3. Qh7 Rg2+ 4. Kxg2 4.Da2+ and problems for checkmate in 9.
5.kg3,Qh3+.6.Kxh3 and not mate in 9.
