Can someone point me to a reference to decode this move notation?
I found one line that works and its pretty amazing.
1. Ra7+ Kg6 Other king moves are also possible and I did not check it yet.
2. Rg7+ Kh5
3. Rh4+ Kxh4
4. Nf5+
Now there are three subvariations:
I
4………..Nxf5
5. Rg4+ Kh5
6. Nf4#
II
4………..Bxf5
5. g3 and if 5….Kxh3
6. Nf4#
and if 5……Kh5 than 6. Nf4#
III
4………..Kh5
is followed with mate in 1.
5. Nf4#
Best wishes
Just a supplement:
If Black King retreats to the eighth rank its mate. Thus for example: 1.Ra7+ Kg8
2. Rf8#
Best wishes
BurntSynapse,
I think you mean the fen code under the diagram. It can be copied and pasted . Do you have chessbase light? Its free. You can download it for free on the chessbase site. Than you can paste the fen code to a board and you will get the position of this post- Checkmate in 6.
A. Weiler, I think you’re right as I found the same lines. I had to look some time for the (simple as soon as I had found it ;)) line after Nxf5. The “missing” lines after other king moves after Ra7+ are no alternatives as they give mate in 2 or 3 moves: 1. -, Kh8 2. Rf8# or 1. -, Kg8 2. Rg7+ 3. Rf8#.
Susan, thanks for posting all these mating lines recently I really love solving them. 🙂
Best wishes
Jochen
To my last post:
1. -, Kg8 2. Rg7+?! – and again overseen a mate in one.
Is this going to happen more often next time? 🙂
1. Ra7+ Kg6
(if king goes to back rank, Rf8#)
2. Rg7+ Kh5
3. Rf5+ !
Now
if 3… Kh4, 4. Rg4#
if 3… Nxf5, 4. Nf4+, Kh4, 5. Rg4#
if 3… Bxf5, 4. Nf4+, Kh4, 5. Nf3#
Am I missing something, or is this mate in 5?
aam: After
1. Ra7+ Kg6
2. Rg7+ Kh5
3. Rf5+! Kh4
4. Rg4
Black has 4. … Nxg4.
This was my first try too. If instead you play 4. Rh5+ there is a mate in 7 similar to the above mate in 6.

Does anyone know if our benevolent grandmaster gives us the definitive answers?
I tried like crazy to contact BurntSynapse but couldn’t. Brother if you still need help contact me at CowboyNoel@gmail.com and I can guide you on reading notation.
