1. Nd3+ Kc4
2. Qf4+ Nd4
3. QxN++
Chess is most likely to be introduced into Russian schools curriculum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had to use the computer for this one so I won’t give it away, but it’s a Morphy like mate.
Guau!!!:) the variation with the qeen sacrifice is amazing!!!
There is only one correct first move for white. After that there are five ways to complete the mate in 3.
I’d say it’s 1. Rd4!
The threat is 2. Rc4# and the main line is Kxd4 2. Qe3+!, Kxe3 3. Nc4#
Or 1. -, Nxd4/Qxd4 2. Bf8+ Qd6 (or Qe7 after Nxd4) 3. Qxd6#(Bxe7#)
[I find it a bit curious that N and Qxd4 lead to the same variations, do I oversee anything?]
The third defense (counting N/Qxd4 as one) is Qe6 but then Qxe6 with many threats (Rc4#/Qd6#) so black has to play K or Nxd4
2. -, Kxd4 3. Nd3 or Nd7 both seem to mate (so called “Dual” in German)
2. -, Nxd4 3. Nd3#
Ah, I just found anothern defense against Rc4# namely Qd5. But now I see that (additionally) 1. Rd4 also threats 2. Nd3# so 1. -, Qd5 i no defense.
There are probably some faults in my variations but I am quite sure that 1. Rd4 is right.
Greetings
Jochen
Susan calls this one “fun.” It was fun for me only after a l-o-n-g search for the first move (1. Rd4); finding that was tricky. Then the fun began as the variations fell into place. Congratulations to whomever composed this.
One note on an earlier suggestion: 1. Nd3+ Kc4 2. Qf4+ Nd4 3. QxN+ is not mate because the Black knight vacated b3 to move to d4. The mate comes 2 moves later: 3. … Kb3 4. Qd5+ Kc2 5. Qa2#.
