Trinidad News – Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

NEWLY crowned national champions Christian Ammon of Maria Regina Grade School and Justin LaBastide of the Holistic Primary School are expected to play in the Open Junior Rapid-play chess tournament.

Ammon and LaBastide were the winners of the recently concluded Trinidad and Tobago Under 12 and Under 8 Junior Championships.

Saturday’s event is open to all junior chess players under the age of 20 and hosted by the St Mary’s College Chess Club. The event is the third in a series of events organised by the TT Chess Foundation and comes off at the St Mary’s College, Pembroke Street, Port-of-Spain on Saturday at 9 am.

The contest is organised on the Foundation’s rating system and features three categories by which players will be more evenly matched, according to their relative strength rather than in age groups.

The rating categories are: Under-1200, Under-1400 and Under-1800. Winners will receive cash prizes and trophies. The tournament is one in a series intended to prepare juniors for the Caribbean Chess Carnival, the annual international contest, which comes off at the Queen’s Park Oval from August 4 to 9.
