So we have 50 players above 2700!! Great achievement for humanity, thanks to computers.
I’m not a believer in Elo ratings inflation. Today’s top players are surely stronger than those from 50 years ago. Raw talent pool (past and present) may be the same but the higher quality and quantity of chess knowledge available today make the difference. Dubious sacrifices that worked 50 years ago would be easily refuted today. So perhaps Hou Yifan would beat Efim Geller.
Similarly, current chess engines would trounce Deep Thought and Deep Blue. Why? Because improved heuristics in desktop chess software makes supercomputer hardware unnecessary. Also, Usein Bolt is faster than the drugged Ben Johnson. Federer would humiliate a young Rod Laver. Pele would score fewer goals in today’s top leagues and world cups.
As a parallel comparison with Elo ratings, studies prove that human IQ has steadily risen over time by about 20 points every generation. So using a common IQ test, today’s average students would be considered geniuses 150 years ago. And average students from 150years ago would seem like retards today.
Yes, the drugged Usain Bolt is faster than the drugged Ben Johnson
