Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Carlsen’s success may partly be based on very strong play in extremely unclear position – like that one against Aronian today. He’s again and again going for unclear and uncommon positions where his opponents may have “objectively” equal play (opponent is pawn up, etc.) while he has a number of threats.
He’s playing positions that demand often a lot of creativity from move to move in order to keep the game dynamic. And it is again and again astonishing how Magnus is able to keep up such accurate play in such higly dynamic positions where too passive moves – not speaking of blunders – may just lose the game.
Very good point, Carlsen simply seems to be the world’s strongest chess PLAYER at the moment.
He still has deficiencies in the opening compared to Anand, Kramnik or Topalov. But NOBODY around has this kind of impressive chess intuition comparable only to all time greats like Capablanca, Fisher or Kasparov.
he”s 17!!!!! I think its the first time in History a 17 year old is the highest rated player on the planet. I don’t understand his detractors….I really don’t. He’s not perfect..nobody is…but damn..he’s a real fighter and I don’t think anyone can push him around anymore.
I’ve seen him overpress….etc. He really does remind me of Fischer….squeeeeeeeeeze!!!and Push!
Good for him.
As an Aside….while all these other qualifiers are doing the WCC match…..Wouldn’t it be great to see a Kasparov/ Carlsen exibition match? Holy ….I bet that would pull in more cash than the actual Fide WWC.

No doubt, a Kasparov-Carlsen exhibition (after Carlsen has become #1 officially) would be more attractive to most sponsors than the World Championship Match between Anand and Kramnik.
It’s not completely unlikely, actually I wouldn’t bet against it.
“Kasparov-Carlsen match”
Keep on dreaming, keep on dreaming.
I hope that now that the idea is out there…..it catches fire…
WOuld be great.
Mike Magnan
He doesn’t remind me Fisher, he reminds me Tal. Tal was a genius, Magnus is a genius too. a greater Genius in my opinion.
I’m sorry that Magnus could not fight for the championship until 2011, due to next two world championship planned metch (Anand vs Kramnick, and, Anand/Kramnick vs Topalov/Kamsky).
I was really excited watching today Magnus match.
go on, Magnus, go to 2800!
Kasparov of today is not the Kasparov of 10 or even five years ago.
maybe…but I doubt it.. I’d bet Kasparov comes back in one form or another to play one last event….he just isn’t the type to totally leave.
He’s a genius and I doubt that he’s not still competitive….actually he just quit because the establishment was skewed against him…and he’d never get another shot…. A match with Carlsen is a great idea I think……while we are all looking at this other stuff thats great…but …c’mon….everyone is waiting for Magnus.
The trouble is this: what does Kasparov have to gain by such a match? He resigned on top, and a loss to Carlsen would detract from that, as he has not been playing for a few years a loss might not be that surprising.
Also, a victory might not have the desired effect. Maybe we would, in a few years, just be saying: “Yeah, he beat Carlsen when he was 17ish, big deal”.
Then again… There’s always the money.
(Don’t missunderstand me; I’d love to see a match between them.)
Now Magnus only needs more experience to his game! That will send him far away beyond 2800. I wonder where he will stop..
Kasparov is a well known chess champion even among those who do not follow chess closely.
Outside the chess world, who actually knows Anand, Kramnik or Topalov?
That’s one of todays main problems of chess and sponsorship in general, of course.
A Carlsen-Kasparov match could draw huge public attention, as Kasparov is very well known and the “kid” Carlsen could possibly break several of Kasparov’s all time records!
Thats the point……neither of em really have anything to gain…but both could possibly win.
It would be an excellent handing of the torch is Kasparov lost and and excellent I’m the Boss moment for Kasparov? There are no losers here. And yes…they both make truck loads of cash. what could be wrong with that…let alone all of us who”d oogle on every single fascinating moved they made…I’m telling you …it’d be an amazing spectacle. Just sort of worried Kasparov might not be up to it due to a lack of recent practice…but a genius like that? I bet he’d be to that
Please stop living in fantasies and come back to earth.
It will never happen.
NOt if people like that exist…
You gotta throw ideas out there…see if they catch fire..c’mon.
Stop pissing on fires and start starting them.
No disrespect intended.
I for one bet it COULD happen.
Sasparov has never backed down from any challenge! Computers …..anything.Kasparov is an honest champion..never hiding behing paperwork..rules…etc….he always put his reputation on the line…and one must respect him for that.
I personally think he’d be happy to accept such a challenge.
Kasparov might play Carlsen a few blitz games
Orange Juice! Orange Juice!
Orange Juice!
Darth Garry against Darth Magnus?
Lol. Not so soon 🙂
A Kasparov – Carlsen rapid match doesn’t sound out of the question. Maybe they would do it for charity. I see little chance for classical games.
Substitute the word ‘rapid’ for ‘blitz’ and it will make the whole idea more realistic.
Classical chess is out of the question, rapid is highly unlikely, blitz is possible.
They probably played quite some blitz games over the internet already. So it wouldn’t be that special, anyway.
