That is the great Women’s World Champion Vera Menchik. She was born in Moscow, became a British-Czech chess player, and was killed by a World War II German V-1 rocket bombing raid of London.
Vera Menchik had defeated many top male chess players including Conel Hugh O’Donel Alexander, Abraham Baratz, Eero Böök, Edgard Colle, Max Euwe, Harry Golombek, Mir Sultan Khan, Frederic Lazard, Jacques Mieses, Philip Stuart Milner-Barry, Karel Opočenský, Brian Reilly, Samuel Reshevsky, Friedrich Sämisch, Lajos Steiner, George Alan Thomas, William Winter, and Frederick Yates. Having been defeated by Menchik, these masters were known as members of the “Vera Menchik Club”.
Similarly, I think there are many top male players who are members of the “Susan Polgar Club”, the “Sophia Polgar Club”, and the “Judit Polgar Club”. Another trivia question: Which top male masters are members of all three Polgar Clubs?
Vera Menchik. First Women’s World Champion.
Vera Menchik. Anglo-Czech, born in Mscow.

The original chess super-woman! She beat a few world champions at chess long before any other woman even beat any! Vera Menchik-Stevenson! A true genius whose life was tragically caught short by WWII.

The trophy for the winning team in the Women’s Chess Olympiad is known as the Vera Menchik Cup.
BTW:
Original name of this Czeh-Brithish Chess Queen is:
Czech: Věra Menčíková
Russia: Вера Францевна Менчик
