Only 2 RP teen chessers still in contention in youth worlds

MANILA, Philippines – Cheradee Chardine Camacho and Jan Emmanuel Garcia were the only Filipinos left with a title shot after the 10th round of the World Youth Chess Championships Wednesday in Vung Tau town, Vietnam.

Camacho defeated Diana Baciu of Moldova to post 6.5 points and share fourth to sixth places with two other European players in the girls’ under-14 category.

The La Union province native was two full points behind leader Rout Padmini of India (8.5) with two rounds left in the 11-round tournament. Camacho’s record stood at six wins, two losses and a draw.

Garcia drew with Fide Master Daniel Naroditsky of the US and also tallied 6.5 points in the boys’ under-14 class. The Ateneo varsity player was tied from fifth to seventh places, but only one point behind leader FM Gujrathi Vidit of India.

Camacho will face Lisa Shut of The Netherlands, while Garcia takes on Jens Kotainy of Germany in matches with title implications.

The Philippines finished Wednesday with a record of 10 wins, three draws and five losses to match its opening-day record.

Besides Camacho, the other ninth-round winners were Jedara Docena (girls’ under 16), Jan Jodiyln Fronda (girls’ under 14), Karl Victor ochoa (boys’ under 18), Haridas Pascua and Alcon John Datu (boys’ under 16), Jerad Docena and John Ray Batucan (boys’ under 12), Paulo Bersamina (boys’ under 10) and Haince Patrick de Leon (boys’ under eight).

Joining Garcia in the draw column were Christy Lamiel Bernales (girls’ under 16) and Samatha Glo Revita (girls’ under 10).

The five losers were Prince Mark Aquino (boys’ under 14), Vince Angelo Medina (boys’ under 12), Kyle Ochoa (boys’ under eight), Cherry Ann Mejia (girls’ under 14) and Rowelyn Acedo (girls’ under 12). – GMANews.TV
