Cuban GM Bruzón Remains on Top in the Edmonton Chess Festival
HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 27 (acn) Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon remains as leader of the Edmonton chess festival in Canada, which covered four of its nine games. Bruzón drew yesterday with his compatriot Rodney Perez and will face today with white pieces the local hero Eric
Hansen, 20, who has won thrice the Alberta championship and also shared the first place in the 2012 Panama Open.
Perez appears second in the classification with eight units and his opponent today will be the also local Richard Wang, who is placed behind him with 7 points.
Wang signed peace with English Nigel Short, defending champion, while Hansen defeated his teammate Dale Haessel and the also Canadian Maxin Doroshenko beat Israeli Vi ctor Mikhalevski.
Yesterday’s other match ended in draw between Edward Porper and Robert Gardner, both Canadians.
On Thursday, in addition to Bruzón-Hansen, the other games will be Wang-Perez, Doroshenko-Short, Gardner- Mikhalevski and Haessel -Porper.
Standings at the end of four rounds: Bruzón (10 points) , Perez (8), Hansen (7), Wang (7), Doroshenko (6 ), Mikhalevski (5) Porper (5) Short (4), Porper (1) and Haessel (1).
