1…Ne3, threat: …Qg2, 2.fxe3 Qxe3+, etc.
Sometimes you just stumble onto the solution by finding problems with the wrong approaches. Trying to make 1. …Nf2 work basically fails because white captures at d5 with check forcing the queens off the board, and probably leading to a draw. Trying to find a way to protect d5 showed me the way:
1. …..Ne3!
Protects d5 while threatening Qg2#, so white must capture the knight:
2. fe3 Qe3
3. Kg2
Or [3.Kh1 Qf3 4.Kg1 Qd1 5.Qe1 Qe1 6.Kg2 Qf1#]. Continuing:
3. …..Rf2 (easiest win)
4. Kh3
Or [4.Kg1 Re2 5.Kh1 Qf3 6.Kg1 Qg2#]; or [4.Kh1 Qf3 5.Kg1 Qg2#]. Continuing:
4. …..Qh6
5. Kg4 Qg6 with either Qh5# or Rh2# to follow depending on whether the white king goes to h3 or h4.
1. … Nf2
threatens Qh1# and Nh3#
If
2. Kf1 Qh1+
3. Ke2 Qd1+
4. Ke3 Qd3#
At most, white can delay by Ne7+
The only weak point in black’s camp is d5.Therefore 1Ne3 is the proper move.
If 1… Nf2, What if White responds with Qxd5+ forcing an exchange?
1. … Ne3, threatening Qg2#
2. fxe3 Qxe3+
3. Kh1 Qf3+
4. Kg1 Qxd1+
it ist also better than Nf2, because it defends the d5-pawn.
greets, jan
Ne3
if Ne7+ Kh8
if then Qxd5 Nxd5
Nxd5 Rd8
@ Anup
Nf2 ?? is a bad move(with all due respect)
coz after N takes f2 pawn, white can play Q x d5 giving a check + to the King and the Queens will be exchanged and Black will lose the initiative.
Black must play : N-e3, threatening mate on g2 with the queen, plus supporting pawn at d5 and avoiding the queen check as seen earlier.
After this white must capture the N at e3 with the pawn.(any other move will be a mate).
so the sequence :
1…. Ne3
2. P x e3, Qx e3+(check)
3.K-g2, Q-e2 +, and queen takes the rook plus supports the imp pawn at d5.(the same if 3.K-h1, Q-f3+,forking the rook )
Black would win the end-game. its practically Knight vs Rook, after the Queens are exchanged.
Sorry Anup, try Ne3
1. …Nf2 draws. 2.Qxp+ QxQ 3.RxQ
1. …Nf2 draws. 2.Qxp+ QxQ 3.RxQ
1. … Ne3
protects d5, threatens mate on g2, and more
2. fxe3 Qxe3+
3. Kg2 Qf3+
4. Kh3 Qh5+
5. Kg2 Qxd1
now, there is threat of Qf1#, and also Qc2+ capturing the N. if 7. Ne7+ Kh8, the N is still exposed with … Qe2+
so white has to play 6. Qb5 or 6. Qa6 (guarding the N and f1).
but white is down material, and the king is still exposed.
e.g.,
6. Qb5/a6 Qc2+
7. Kh3 Qf5+
8. Kg2 Qf3+
9. Kh3 Qf1+
10 Qxf1 Rxf1
0-1
After 1…Nxf2? White has 2.Qxd5+ forcing an exchange of queens. Instead, what about 1…Ne3, with threats to g2 and d1, while defending d5. 2.fxe3 Qxe3 4.K moves Qf3+ win the rook.
Reshevsky style. Happy 100th Sammy!
Aw …. how could I have missed 2. Qd5 🙁
