After a very hotly contested election for the Presidency of FIDE for the next four years, the encumbent, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, has defeated team Karpov with the backing of Kasparov by a 95-55 margin. Congratulations to President Ilyumzhinov.
As soon as the results were announced, FIDE President Ilyumzhinov immediately asked his opponent Karpov to unite and offered him the position of Vice President of FIDE.
I hope that my good friends and chess legends Karpov and Kasparov will continue to promote chess. They gave everything they had in this election but it did not work out. I hope that both sides can put away their differences and work toward the common goal of making our sport better and brighter.
Chess needs all the help it can get.
“Win with grace, lose with dignity.” Karpov should accept.
Well this is good to see , karpov as vice president seem cool. i stay away from politics Susan but that ground zero idea is brilliant to say the least. Um just givin an opinion thats all and if i was in india id holdup on those math papers cuz u look up and you be doin that every year, people something else huh Susan?
From Karpov 2010:
“This election also showed how it has become impossible to effect this change from within FIDE, which has long ceased to represent the federations or the chess players.”
Wow, will we see a new organization outside of FIDE? Obviously Kasparov’s been down that road before.
Jackass and Goichberg are wrong again at the expense of all American players. The Karpov slate is doomed from the start when they linked up with the USCF, the most corrupt chess federation which runs by slick willies like Bill Goichberg, Randy Bauer, and Jim Berry.
A sad and tragic day for Chess.
how can so many Federations vote against Chess by failing to vote for Karpov ?
Euwe was a great Fide President, and Karpov wouldf have been too with a great love for the sport and great knowledge
a very very sad day for chess
