It happens a few times a month. “Inside Edition” correspondent Les Trent is spotted in Western New York, and, invariably, someone will recognize him and then act like a celebrity reporter.

“People ask, ‘Why are you here?’” said the 46-year-old Trent in a recent interview in an East Aurora coffee spot. “‘I just saw you on ‘Inside Edition’ – what are you doing here?’ A lot of people think I’m based in Los Angeles.” Trent’s response is simple: “My kids.”

Trent has been commuting between Buffalo and New York City for 14 years. He’s been based here while working on “Inside Edition,” “American Journal” and “Extra.” He and his wife, Kimberly, separated about five years ago, but he still makes the trip from his home in Bloomfield, N.J., to Western New York two or three times a month to see their children, Morgan, 16, and Victoria, 13.

“My life really is on the weekends with my kids,” said Trent.

Trent’s assignments have included covering Princess Diana’s death, Michael Jackson’s legal problems, interviewing President Clinton and searching for chess champion Bobby Fischer.

“I have been all over the world with this show,” said Trent. “I went to Iceland to track down Bobby Fischer. … We found him living in a hotel. He didn’t talk to us. He did bowl me over to try to get away from my camera. He literally ran into me like a linebacker.”
