Chess teams from Boaz Middle and Intermediate schools competed in the Alabama Scholastic Team Chess Championship April 11 in Pelham.

The competition was the first for the teams, which began practicing and learning the fundamentals of the game at the beginning of the current school year.

Each participating school sent five players to compete in four rounds of tournament play. The BMS team, made up of Jackson Gray, Michael Melcher, Camron Sims, Logan Sims, and Ram Srirangam, took fourth place in the junior high section.

The BIS team, made up of Baylee Alldredge, Parker Knighten, Gloma Milner, Devin Rios, and Ever Vicente-Lopez, took fourth place in the elementary section. Each team won exactly one match to earn their fourth-place finish.

“For our first year, I can’t complain,” said coach Nathan Saint. “I am extremely proud of all the hard work these students put into chess and they should all be proud of their results.

“I was really thrilled to see them work together as a team as well.”
