‘Boardwalk Empire’s’ Michael Stuhlbarg Joins Bobby Fischer Chess Pic ‘Pawn Sacrifice’

Boardwalk Empire star Michael Stuhlbarg has joined the Bobby Fischer chess drama Pawn Sacrifice.

Directed by Edward Zwick, the film stars Tobey Maguire as the American chess phenom and Liev Schreiber as his Soviet archrival Boris Spassky.

Gail Katz Productions and Maguire’s Material Pictures are producing Pawn Sacrifice, which began filming this week in Montreal. Production started in early October in Reykjavik, Iceland. The 41-day shoot is scheduled to wrap in Los Angeles on Dec. 11.

Set at the height of the Cold War, the film chronicles Fischer and Spassky’s so-called “Match of the Century,” which was a battle of superpowers, complete with political intrigue and psychological warfare – with the whole world watching.

Stuhlbarg, who joins Peter Sarsgaard in a supporting role, will play Fischer’s advisor and attorney during his rise to fame and bid for the world championship.Stephen Knight (Eastern Promises) wrote the screenplay. The film is being financed by MICA Entertainment. Gail Katz (The Perfect Storm), Maguire and Zwick are producing. Stuhlbarg, who appeared with Sarsgaard in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, is repped by ICM and Viking Entertainment.
